FOUNDATION
FRIENDS OF NAZARETH
wants to open up new prospects for young Palestinians. Since 1985 it has called for attention to a usually neglected group of young citizens of Israel. Besides bringing the other side of Israel to public attention by publishing a ‘Contactbrief’, the Foundation focuses on the university and college education of this group by way of a scholarship project. With financial support for mainly female students the Foundation aims at an increasing role of well educated women in Israeli society. In this way the Foundation implements its objective: ‘the improvement of the position of Palestinian citizens in view of a reconciliation between Israel and the Palestinian people’. The
Foundation is based on Christian principles. However, religion is no
criterion for selection in the awarding of grants. Both Christian and
Muslim students are participating in the Scholarship program. We
demand a personal contribution of each student in the form of
volunteer work. Fund-raising is essential
for the awarding of study grants.
History
In November 1985 the Foundation was created within the framework of contacts between an ecumenical community of Christians in Tilburg (the Netherlands) and the (Anglican) Christ Evangelical Church in Nazareth. Later on the Foundation has broadened its contacts to other towns in Israel. Since 1989 more than a hundred Palestinian students have graduated at the universities of Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Beer Sheva with a grant from the Foundation. Scholarship project
The scholarship project is an initiative of the Foundation. Palestinian students, mainly women, are carefully selected by contact persons of the Foundation in Israel. Students agree with the conditions for a 50% scholarship, which include doing voluntary work and a 25% repayment of the scholarship received. Young Palestinian citizens of Israel do not qualify for an Israeli government grant.
Sana Foundation is a new initiative and a sister foundation in Israel of the Foundation Friends of Nazareth. Like the Foundation Friends of Nazareth it aims to offer opportunities of higher education for Palestinian women by providing grants. These grants are financed by scholarship repayments made by graduated students to the Foundation Friends of Nazareth.
