Tilburg Peace Prize 2012 awarded to Els Schots, secretary to the Foundation Friends of Nazareth.

Completely unawares Els Schots attended the annual distribution of the Tilburg Peace Prize that Friday afternoon.

Well, how do you react when entering the Town Hall council chamber you see colleagues you just met at work that morning, relatives and familiar faces from all over the country?

In a word it came as a complete surprise to Els.

That afternoon there was an extensive programme prior to the announcement of the winner of Tilburg Peace Prize 2012.

After an introduction by Professor DR. Mirjam van Reisen and the moving performance by Stanislav Jusufovic Marieke Moorman, alderman of Tilburg, takes the floor. After words of approval and a justification she hands Els Schots the Peace Prize 2012, a work of art by photographer Gerdien Wolthaus Paauw.

From the committee report

The main motive to nominate Els is her unflagging dedication all these years to the Foundation Friends of Nazareth.

The committee praised the fact that the winner devotes herself heart and soul to end the underprivileged status of the Palestinian community in Israel.

The fact that Els is a modest person, always ready to help others, not eager to have everyone’s eyes on her, made the committee decide that it was only right to award her the Tilburg Peace Prize 2012.
